Assisi and Giotto: scene by scene, in full detail, the moving story of the life and extraordinary experiences of St. Francis, in frescoes that launched the great history of Italian painting, the cycle of 28 scenes in the Upper Basilica.
The secrets, the behind-the-scenes stories, the novelties of a work that efficiently recounts an extraordinary illustrated novel, the life and death of a saint of the people, at a time in history that was fraught with contradictions.
The documentary illustrates the new features in painting introduced by Giotto, and moves frequently from the frescoes to the places where St. Francis lived: from the city square with the Temple of Minerva to the church of St. Damian, the site of the crucifix that according to legend spoke to the saint; from the mountain of Verna, where Francis received the stigmata, to Porziuncola, the little church where the saint died, surrounded by his dearest companions.
